Arrows fall to top-seeded Wisconsin Heights

MAZOMANIE – The 2016-17 girls basketball season came to an end for the Lancaster Flying Arrows last Saturday night, as they suffered a 59-48 loss to top-seeded Wisconsin Heights in a division 4 regional semifinal contest.

With the loss, coach Rob Wagner’s squad concluded the season with an overall record of 13-11, after going 4-6 in Southwest Wisconsin Conference action.

As for Wisconsin Heights (22-2), they went on to lose to fourth-seeded Darlington (17-7), 54-47, in this past Monday night’s regional final.

Things were going good for the Flying Arrows during the first half of last Saturday night’s contest, as coach Wagner’s squad took a 27-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Vanguards chipped away at Lancaster’s lead in the second half, until they finally had taken control late in the contest.

Finishing with a team-high 14 points was sophomore guard Devin Wagner, who made 5-of-6 free throw attempts in the first half.

Fellow sophomore Lydia Murphy finished with 10 points, eight of which came in the first half.

Providing some sort of a spark in the second half was junior Morelia Galvan, who scored all eight of her points in the second session, knocking down two 3-pointers along the way.

The Flying Arrows advanced to Saturday’s regional semifinal contest after knocking off visiting New Glarus, 46-41, last Tuesday night.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout most of the first half until Lancaster took its largest lead of seven points, 24-17, with 2:40 to play in the opening half.

New Glarus closed out the first half with a 6-0 run to make it a one-point game at halftime, 24-23.

Early in the second half, New Glarus held a 27-24 lead and with 12:43 to play in the game, led for the last time at 27-26.

Lancaster held their biggest lead of six points, 39-33, with 4:10 to play in the second half and made just enough free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

In the final four minutes, New Glarus was 4-of-13 (31%) from the field, while committing five turnovers and coming away with four steals.

Also during the last four minutes, Lancaster made 6-of-15 (40%) free throw attempts and got one field goal from senior center Kristina Larson.

Finishing Tuesday night’s contest with a team-high 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots was senior Kristina Larson, while fellow senior post player Carly Chadd was close behind with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals.

Devin Wagner led the team with five assists, while Morelia Galvan finished with seven points and Lydia Murphy 6.

From the field, the Lancaster ladies made 14-of-50 (28%) shot attempts, including 4-of-15 (27%) from 3-point range. They were 14-of-34 (41%) from the free throw line, committed 11 turnovers and came away with 10 team steals.

With the season having come to an end, so too does the prep career for four seniors that include: Lauren Thole, Eden Connelly, Carly Chadd and Kristina Larson.
