SOUTH WAYNE — Belmont sophomore Isaac Wiegel went 2–1 and finished second at 113 pounds at Saturday’s season-opening 15-team Black Hawk Invitational.

Wiegel used a first-round bye and a 15–0 technical fall over Beloit Turner’s Jack Sagaitis to reach the 113-pound title match.

In the finals Wiegel suffered a 4–0 loss to Orfordville Parkview’s Jackson Hauri.

It was a scoreless match going into the third period. Wiegel took a shot and got tossed to his back giving up a takedown and two-point near fall.

“It’s hard not to be happy when someone makes the finals of a tournament,” said Belmont/Platteville head coach Andrew Campbell. “But at the same time, we had our chances to win but didn’t.”

Wiegel’s second-place finish helped the Belmont/Platteville co-op finish 12th out of 15 teams with 40.5 points.
Beloit Turner won the tournament with 212.5 points.

Platteville junior Grey Genzoli went 3–2 to place sixth at 170 pounds. He received a consolation bye, a 6–2 victory over Westfield’s Parker Wasson and a first-period pin of Richland Center’s Evan Thompson. Genzoli was the only other Brave to earn a victory on the mat Saturday.

Christopher Gillen (103), Joshua Taber (138) and Tristan Prater (152) each went 0–2. Alex Sargent went 0–3 at 126, while Quinn Kafar went 0–3 at 182.

“We were not aggressive enough. We need to initiate more of the scoring, especially on our feet,” added Campbell.
The Braves will return to action Saturday at the Sugar River Invitational at Belleville High School.
