SOUTH WAYNE – With 223 total points, the Lancaster wrestling team took top honors at last Saturday’s Black Hawk Invite, finishing 26 points ahead of the second-place team from Darlington/Black Hawk.
Coach Brad Sturmer had three individual champions from Saturday’s invite, as freshman Remington Bontreger won the 106-pound weight class, junior Caleb Lucey the 120-pound weight class, and junior Troy Klein the 182-pound weight class.
Coming in second and losing in their championship matches were 113-pound sophomore Matthew Crosby and 132-pound junior Dylan Tydrich.
“We got into this tournament hoping to build some confidence with the guys,” said Lancaster coach Brad Sturmer. “It’s a good tournament for us to be in, with a lot of other division 3 schools and some D2 as well. It’s good competition at our level, and it’s nice to come out in first at any tournament.”
“I was really impressed with Troy, who won a couple of really solid matches, and it was awesome to see Dylan Tydrich get runner up,” Sturmer added. “Dylan has worked really hard the first couple of years and for this to be kind of a break-through tournament for him was pretty awesome.”
For River Ridge/Cassville, who finished 12th of 14 teams with 49 points from five wrestlers, senior heavyweight Ben Wheeler placed second, while 138-pound junior Caleb Lenzendorf finished third.
The Flying Arrows opened up the season last Thursday night at home against visiting Belleville/Monticello/New Glarus, where they collected a 54-18 dual-meet victory.
Lancaster scored 42 points on seven forfeits, while also collecting one pin and two decisions.
The team’s only pin came from 160-pound junior Owen Wolf, while Bontreger picked up a 12-6 decision at 106 pounds, and senior Tyler Hale a 2-0 victory in his heavyweight match.
