Senior guard Stephanie Philipps scored a career-high 17 points and the Hillmen scored 38 points from the free throw line in a 69–54 non-conference triumph over visiting Mount Horeb in a game marred by excessive fouling.
The teams were whistled for a combined 55 fouls and shot an astounding 89 free throws. A pair of players from each team fouled out.
Undefeated Platteville cashed in 73 percent of its freebie attempts making 38-of-52 from the stripe, including 13-of-14 in the third quarter, to improve to 5–0 on the season.
Conversely the Vikings shot just 46 percent from the line making just 17-of-37 attempts in the loss.
The Hillmen outscored Mount Horeb (2–3) 35–24 in the second half to cushion their four-point halftime lead.
Sophomore Cassie Hamer scored 14 points to aid the winning effort, while senior guard Julia Lawinger chipped in 13 for the Hillmen, who are off to their best start in Wayne Jentz’s seven-years as the girls’ head coach. In fact, no Platteville girls’ team has started 5–0 in well over a decade.
Platteville will look to extend its five-game winning streak Friday at home against Dodgeville (2–1, 1–0 SWC). Coach Jentz’s team will then host Darlington on Tuesday.
Last Thursday Platteville opened SWC play with a dominating 57–30 victory over River Valley.
Senior forward Elisa Bilderback led the victors with 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Hamer had 12 points and four rebounds, while Lawinger chipped in nine points, eights rebounds, four assists and three of Platteville’s 11 steals.
Platteville’s full-court pressure flustered the Blackhawks (2–3, 0–2) from the beginning of the game as the Hillmen raced out to a 24–5 first-quarter lead. They lead 36–7 at the break.
Platteville shot 46 percent (24-of-52) in the win, assisted on 14 of its 24 made baskets and committed just eight turnovers, a nearly 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio Jentz would love to have every game.
Last Tuesday Platteville used a 17–8 third-quarter run to pull away from Belleville to secure a 51–37 victory in the first of five straight home games for the victorious Hillmen.
