High-speed chase ends in crash

SHULLSBURG – A high-speed chase that began in JoDaviess County, Illinois ended in a crash at the intersection of State Highway 11 and Aetna Road outside of Shullsburg.
Clarence M. Campbell, Jr., 51 of Rockford, Illinois, was transported to Southwest Health Center in Platteville before Medflight transferred him to the University Hospital in Madison. The extent of Campbell’s injuries was unknown at the time of the news release from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department.
According to the release, Warren Police Department tried to stop a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Campbell in the Village of Warren after receiving a traffic complaint of a vehicle driving erratically. As the officer attempted to make contact, Campbell sped away.
A Lafayette County Deputy joined the pursuit when Campbell entered Lafayette County on State Highway 78 near the intersection of White School Road. The pursuit continued on State Highway 78 into Gratiot where Campbell turned onto State Highway 11. Speeds reached up to 80 mph.
The vehicle continued through Shullsburg until he lost control when passenger side tires hit the gravel shoulder, causing Campbell to overcorrect where the vehicle cam back onto the highway, crossed over the centerline and exited the roadway again on the opposite side.
Campbell’s vehicle rolled over several times and came to rest on its tires in a field adjacent to the highway.
Campbell was not wearing his seatbelt and was able to exit the vehicle himself. He was the only occupant in the vehicle.
Campbell faces multiple charges including operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (6th offense), operating a motor vehicle while revoked, fleeing an office and multiple traffic offenses.
The vehicle sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Warren, Shullsburg and Darlington Police Departments, and the Shullsburg Fire and EMS.
