GOLDEN BOYS: Herbst leads Platteville to SWC title

REEDSBURG — The Platteville boys golf team is the Southwest Wisconsin Conference champion once again.

The Hillmen traveled to Reedsburg Country Club for the SWC Championships last Tuesday.

Clinging to a narrow lead in the SWC standings going into last week’s conference meet and needing to finish in the top 2 to win a second straight SWC championship, Platteville played some of its best golf of the season.

The Hillmen a posted a combined 319 team score to win Tuesday’s 18-hole tournament by 12 strokes ahead of Lancaster (331), Dodgeville (334), River Valley (339), Prairie du Chien (373) and Richland Center (392).

The team win also clinched this year’s overall conference title with 22 points, while the Flying Arrows (19.5) finished second ahead of Dodgeville (16), River Valley (14.5), Prairie du Chien (8) and Richland Center (4).

The teams of the SWC played three 18-hole regular season SWC meets this spring. The results of each regular season meet along with last week’s conference meet were combined to determine the final conference standings, with the winner of each event earning six points, the runner-up five and so on.

Platteville junior Cole Herbst shot an impressive even par 72 at Reedsburgs to take meet medalist honors and in the process clinched his third straight SWC Player of the Year honor by finishing first in the season-long individual SWC standings with 335 points, ahead of Lancaster seniors Brady Mack (317.5) and Aidan Wilson (307.5).

Platteville freshman Hudson Weittenhiller shot 78 which to tie Lancaster’s Wilson for second at last week’s conference meet.

Senior Jauron Blevins record an 84 to finished ninth, Ty Simmons totaled 85 to place 10th, and Aiden Voigts finished with non-counting 91 to finish 19th.

The top four individual scores in WIAA golf count toward each team’s score.

Besides Herbst’s Player of the Year honosr, the Hillmen earned multiple other All-SWC awards.

Herbst and Weittenhiller were named to the All-SWC first team (top five golfers), while Simmons and Blevins earned All-SWC honors, after placing ninth and 10th in the final individual SWC standings.

Voigts finished 17th in the individual standings and just missed out on All-SWC honors.

Along with the great golf played by the Hillmen, Blevins was named the recipient of the Jimmy Dale Johnson Scholarship.

The Jimmie Dale Johnson Scholarship is an annual award established to support students who demonstrate excellence both academically and athletically. This scholarship is open to any SWC golf senior nominated by their school who plans to attend a post-high school educational program, whether that be college, vocational training, or another form of higher education.

Platteville was back in action Tuesday at the 10-team WIAA Division 2 Monroe Regional at the Monroe Golf Club, winning the tournament by nine strokes over Lancaster (327) and 11 over SWAL champion Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern (329).

The top four teams, and top four individuals not on a qualifying team, advance to the Tuesday’s WIAA D2 New Glarus Sectional at Edleweiss Chalet Country Club.
