A Readstown woman was arrested Feb. 22 and charged with selling heroin to a Reedsburg man who died from an overdose on Christmas Day.

Reedsburg Police Chief Timothy Becker said police arrested 37-year-old Jessica Hughes after determining she had sold the heroin to 37-year-old Jonathan Steinmetz that caused his death.

Family members found Steinmetz dead in a home on Reedsburg’s east side Christmas Day.

A toxicology report from the state Crime Laboratory indicated Steinmetz died of a heroin overdose. An investigation determined Steinmetz purchased the heroin from Hughes on Christmas Eve.

Hughes was taken to the Sauk County Jail and held pending an appearance in Circuit Court.

Becker said a request for a charge of first-degree reckless homicide was forwarded to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office for review.
