Sheriff: Beware storm damage scam artists

The Vernon County Sheriff's Office in Viroqua is warning county residents of scams related to damage caused by hail storms which hit the area April 12.

Sheriff John Spears said his office has received reports of people going door-to-door in the Viroqua area and inspecting roofs and houses for storm damage.

A hail storm dropped stones nearly the size of a golf ball in areas near Readstown, Stoddard and Westby. Other areas, such as Viroqua were pelted with quarter-sized hail. Hillsboro was also pelted with hail.

Spears said anyone unsure of a contractor should ask to see their solicitor's permit, which they must carry to offer services door-to-door. If a solicitor does not have a permit, Spears asks residents to call the Sheriff's Office at 608-637-2123.
