HAZEL GREEN — Fennimore swept the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League track and field titles for a third straight year Monday at Southwestern High School.
The Fennimore girls scored 145 points to claim their fourth straight conference title, 19 better than the runner-up Cuba City (126).
The Fennimore boys scored 160 points to win their third straight SWAL title ahead of runner-up Cuba City (113) and Darlington (106), Darlington (106), Boscobel (76), Southwestern (35) and Riverdale (31).
"Our young people buy into the 'what’s best for the team' approach and then give it their all to get team points," said Fennimore head coach Gregg Davis. "We’ve been blessed with good athletes who understand the benefit of working toward goals.
"We get 10 points from each conference champ but it’s the second through seventh place finishers who pad the team point total and provide that winning cushion. Each place winner is just as important as the next."
Senior Rhiannon Nelson-Hahn won the girls’ 100 hurdles (16.01 seconds) and 300 hurdles (50.84), placed second in the triple jump (33’0”) and fifth in the long jump (15'1.'75") to score a team-high 31 points for Gregg Davis’ Fennimore girls’ team.
Junior Kate Kenney also won a conference title for the Fennimore girls by clearing 5’1” in the high jump.
Fellow juniors Brooklyn Ritchie and Natalie Horsfall, who weren’t even out for track this year until just a few weeks ago, also played key roles in Fennimore girls’ championship Monday night combining for 40 team points in individual events.
Ritchie won the 100-meter dash (13.03), and finished second in the 200 (27.33) and long jump (15’10.25”), scoring the Fennimore girls to the title. She also teamed with senior Peyton Lendosky, junior Carlotta Andel and sophomore Lola Hahn to finish third in the 4x100 relay (53.84), and finished the night with 27.5 team points.
Horsfall placed second in the girls’ 800-meter run (2:25.88) and third in the 1,600 (5:21.51), and teamed with fellow juniors Kaylie Czaplewski, Malorie French and Katie Nelson to place fifth in the 4x400 relay (4:29.35). Horsfall earned the team 14.75 team points.
"Rhiannon, Natalie and Brooklyn all bring experience and proven ability," said Davis. "Rhiannon continued to excel in the hurdle events, Nat has continued to impress and keeps improving each meet, and Brooklyn is just a powerful athlete who is able to be at or near the top of multiple events."
Sophomore Mayleigh Seitz placed second in the 300 hurdles (53.03), while Lendosky finished third in the 100 (13.69) and the long jump (15’5”), and Kiera Kartman was third in the 3,200 (12:26.31).
Senior Madden Crubel won the boys’ shot put (53’1.5”) and the discus with a new SWAL record toss of 173’9” just two weeks after returning from an injury that kept him out of competition for nearly a month.
"Madden is doing exactly what he started planning for when he was in sixth grade," said Davis. "He lives and breathes track and field. He had a minor abductor strain early in the year and we were cautious bringing him back. He’s full steam ahead now.
Fellow senior Griffin Fry scored a team-high 22 points by winning the 800 (2:05.77) and 1,600 (4:49.85), and placed sixth in the 3,200 (11:34.54).
Junior Jakob Kretschman won the boys’ 100-meter dash (11.25), was third in the 200 (23.50) and fifth in the long jump (18’5.25”).
"Griffin was our iron man," added Davis. "He wanted to do the 1,600, 800, and 3,200 Monday night, which on such a short time turnaround is extremely difficult. He has improved so much this year and is getting the recognition he deserves."
Freshman Bobby Schmidt won the 3,200 (10:49.43) and finished second in the 1,600 (4:55.16), while Orlando Bonilla was second in the 3,200 (11:10.39), Cooper Imhoff was second in the triple jump (38’4.75”) and freshman Brogan Demo was second in the discus (142’9”).
Fennimore will return to action Tuesday at the WIAA Division 3 River Ridge Regional. The top four finishers in each event will advance to next Friday's D3 Bangor Sectional.
