PLATTEVILLE — David and Mary Lou Jones have set up a $1,000 PHS Scholarship Fund scholarship for the class of 2013.

“The Platteville School District provides great educational opportunities for its students,” said Mary Lou Jones. “Because David and I, along with our children,  Greg and Michelle, were able to pursue post-secondary education after receiving  outstanding educations at Platteville High School, we are pleased to help support  another PHS graduate begin his or her college career.”

Mary Lou graduated from Platteville High School in 1963 and then pursued bachelors and master’s degrees in education. She taught English and Youth Tutoring Youth at Platteville High School prior to becoming the school district’s reading specialist. The last three years of her career were spent as the director of the O.E. Gray Early Learning Center.

David graduated from PHS in 1958 and completed post-secondary education at MHTC. He spent two years in the U.S. Army. David was hired at Mound City Bank in Platteville, where he worked until his retirement in 2000. From 1985 to 2003, David was the head softball coach at PHS . David’s father also taught and coached at Platteville High School until his death in 1954.

David and Mary Lou’s daughter Michelle (PHS 1987) works for Weight Watchers and lives in Hudson with her husband Dan Brzozowski. Their son Greg (PHS 1989) is the head women’s softball coach at Winona State University. He lives with his wife Cyndy and children Carson and Piper in Winona, Minn.

“Mary Lou and David joined others in the community who are proactively reaching out to the PHS Scholarship Fund asking for information and offering to help,” said Gene Weber of the PHS Scholarship Fund. “This is becoming quite common now that our community is more aware of the scholarship support need, and I might add very typical of David and Mary Lou’s long service to the Platteville community and school district. We appreciate it!”

“David and Mary Lou Jones have always given more of themselves than they expect in return,” said Dean Isaacson, retired Platteville school superintendent. “Their generous scholarship donation is another in a long list of ways that they have contributed to the Platteville community, its schools and its youth. Dave and Mary Lou are worthy of imitation.”

The PHS Scholarship Fund’s mission is to expand access to higher education for the students of the Platteville School District. The fund fulfills this mission primarily be providing higher education scholarships for Platteville graduates to help them further their post-high school education.
