PLATTEVILLE — The Platteville School Board voted to slightly adjust the school district’s 2012–13 calendar Monday night.

Classes start Sept. 4 and run until June 7. Students have days off Oct. 26, Nov. 22–23 for Thanksgiving, Dec. 22–Jan. 1 for winter break, Jan. 21, March 23–April 1 for spring break, and May 27 for Memorial Day.

Early release days are scheduled for Oct. 10, Dec. 12, Jan. 9 and Feb. 13. The school board approved adding March 7 or March 14 as an additional early-release day.

“The community doesn’t always see what’s accomplished on those days,” said district superintendent Connie Valenza. “We have a lot of work to do the next couple of years” with new state educational standards — “significant needs moving ahead.”

The school board also approved moving the second snow makeup day to June 11, one day after a scheduled inservice day June 10. The first snow day will be a technology training day for school district staff.

The school district calendar formerly had to be bargained with the Platteville Education Association. With the enactment of public employee collective bargaining restrictions, the school district decides the calendar.

One of the few things that is still part of a school district union contract, salaries, will be negotiated between the school district and its two unions, the PEA and Platteville Educational Support Personnel, soon.

“There really are two questions for both units that have to be answered,” said Valenza. “Number one is how much, and number two is how is it distributed.”

According to state law, the increase in total pay from the bachelor’s degree level can increase no more than the Consumer Price Index, 3.16 percent.
