UW–Platteville Chancellor Dennis J. Shields was named to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Board of Directors during its annual meeting Oct. 23.
Shields is one of 19 directors on the board, which serves more than 400 public colleges, universities and systems. AASCU’s members share a learning- and teaching-centered culture, a historic commitment to underserved student populations and a dedication to research and creativity that advances their regions’ economic progress and cultural development.
“It is an honor to be chosen to serve on the board of directors,” said Shields. “The American Association of State Colleges and Universities is a dynamic organization, which has had a transformative influence on American public higher education through advocacy, leadership and service. This newfound responsibility will directly benefit all member institutions, including UW–Platteville, as AASCU actively encourages broad access to education for all students, regardless of socioeconomic background, thus transforming society and setting a global standard.”
Shields became the 14th chief executive of UW–Platteville in 2010. His vision for higher education includes a focus on academic excellence, serious pursuit of scholarship including applied research and high quality teaching, and experiences and services for students, employees, alumni and friends. Initiatives are focused on giving students the tools that they will need throughout life to be independent, critical thinkers and problem solvers who are contributing citizens within their communities.
During his three-year tenure at UW–Platteville, enrollment has risen by almost 1,000 students, and Rountree Commons and Bridgeway Commons residence halls were built.
The university has developed a strategic plan to guide future academic success and a master plan to serve as a blueprint for future physical needs.
