Members of the Platteville Veterans Honor Roll Association have planned a special program in City Park Monday at 10 a.m. as part of the community celebration of the 4th of July.

The program will recognize and honor Platteville’s Vietnam Era Veterans during the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. A special presentation will be made by keynote speaker Bill Kloster, who will talk about this community commemoration.

The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and “in conducting the commemorative program, the Secretary shall coordinate, support, and facilitate other programs and activities of the Federal Government, State and local governments, and other persons and organizations in commemoration of the Vietnam War.”

Special music will be performed by Ian McCann accompanied by Amelia Armstrong, with an invocation by Rev. Brenda Whitford. Mike Myers will be serving as Emcee.   Assistance will be provided by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

While there will be some seating, it is recommended that community members bring their own lawn chairs.

All Vietnam Era veterans are encouraged and warmly invited to attend.

The program and the annual fireworks highlight Platteville’s annual 4th of July Celebration Monday.

The annual 5K and youth walk/run sponsored by Clare Bank will start at the Rollo Jamison Museum, with registration at 7:30 a.m. and the walk/run at 8 a.m.

Registration is online at www.platteville.org/recreation.

Heritage Day will be held at the museum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including games, an antique car and tractor show, a scavenger hunt and demonstrations. The Wundo Band will perform from noon to 4 p.m.

At Legion Field, a bean bag tournament will be held at 2 p.m., with other activities starting at 4 p.m. The Kid’s Fun Zone will be open at 5 p.m. Platteville Youth Baseball and the Jaycees will sell food and beverages.

Fireworks will be held at dusk. The rain date is Tuesday.
