The Fennimore Memorial Park Committee and the American Legion Auxiliary, with the cooperation of the Fennimore American Legion and City of Fennimore, are continuing the process of expanding the community’s current war memorial. The committee has announced a Groundbreaking Ceremony at the Fennimore Memorial Park, which will be held on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m., with a reception to immediately follow in the Legion Hall. The public is invited.
The new memorial will consist of a title stone and 10 polished China back granite stones with the names of Fennimore area servicemen and women; the stones will designate the time frame in which they served. The park will also contain flowerbeds and benches to accent the beauty of the park. The existing cannons will be relocated within the park and the first Memorial Honor Roll that stood in the park in the early 1950s and the current memorial located in front of the Memorial Building will be commemorated on the title stone. Several flagpoles will also enhance the memorial.
The criteria for having a name on the memorial are:
1. You must be a Fennimore area native or currently live within the Fennimore school district, and/or you must have lived in the district at one time for more than five years;
2. You must have been honorably discharged from a branch of the military service.
Donations toward the memorial may be made at any time. Checks can be made payable to: Fennimore Memorial Park Fund, and sent to: American Bank, c/o Fennimore Memorial Park Fund, 1055 Lincoln Ave. Fennimore, WI 53809. For inquiries, call Dagna Doan, 822-4226, or Merry Cooley, 822-3983.
