The Leo M. Kane American Legion Auxiliary will distribute poppies at Platteville businesses Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
The red poppy has become nationally recognized as a symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for the U.S. in all wars.
Disabled veterans hand-craft the flowers in government hospitals and convalescent workshops. The veterans are paid for the work; for many it is the only opportunity to earn money in a year. Auxiliary members distribute poppies with a request that the recipient donate to the poppy funds.
All donations directly support the needs of active-duty military, veterans and their families through the auxiliary’s outreach program services.
