Local unemployment rates rise in January

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development has released the preliminary January unemployment rates, and all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties have higher actual unadjusted jobless rates than December.

In Vernon County, the unemployment rate increased over one percentage point, from 4.3 percent in December to 5.6 percent in January.

The preliminary unemployment rates for neighboring counties are as follows:

Adams County: 9.2 percent, up from 7.4 percent in December

Juneau County: 6.3 percent, up from 5 percent in December

Monroe County: 5.4 percent, up from 4.4 percent in December

Sauk County: 4.9 percent, up from 4 percent in December

The data also shows Wisconsin’s preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.6 percent remained below the national rate of 4.9 percent in January.
