George G. “Butch” Ubersox, age 89 of Shullsburg, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2017 at Lafayette Manor in Darlington. He was born July 14, 1928 in Shullsburg the son of Frederick and Hannah (Christen) Ubersox. Butch was united in marriage to Doris Staver on Nov. 24, 1973 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Darlington.  He grew up and lived in Shullsburg his entire life.  Butch enlisted in the United States Army during Korean War and served from 1952 until being honorably discharged in 1955. He was part of the 608th Field Artillery and spent time in Busan and Holland. Butch was a butcher for over 20 years and later opened up Miner Café turning it into Butch and Dorie’s Bar.
Butch is survived by three step-children: Dan (Shelly) Hicks of Argyle, Becky Lyne of Shullsburg, and David Hicks of Shullsburg; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; his twin brother: Chuck Ubersox of Shullsburg; three sisters-in-law: Brigid Ubersox and Berny Ubersox both of Shullsburg and Lois Ubersox of Gratiot; one step-son-in-law: Corky Ward of rural Darlington; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Doris on Oct. 12, 2005; five sisters: Rose Dennler, Lydia Teutschmann, Frieda Monahan, Celia Schwartz, and Ann Herman; six brothers: Walter, Frank, Bill, Fritz, Robert, and John “Hans” Ubersox; two step-daughters: Sharon (Gordy) McGlynn and Cindy Ward; and one step-son-in-law: Clarence “Buster” Lyne.
Butch was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Darlington, McCann - Richards American Legion and VFW Post #105 of Shullsburg, and past member of the Shullsburg Lions Club. He was an avid vegetable gardener and grew potatoes for half the town of Shullsburg. Butch enjoyed playing poker and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.. at Immanuel United Church of Christ (339 E. Louisa Street, Darlington) with Rev. Barbara Brakey officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by McCann-Richards American Legion and VFW Post #105 of Shullsburg. A visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 22, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home (235 N. Judgement Street, Shullsburg). A visitation will also be held Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.
