Mildred I. Meier, age 99 of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly Browntown/ Woodford area, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2017 at Grand Meadows in Dubuque, Iowa, after a short illness. She was born on Oct. 28, 1918 on the family farm in Jordan Township, Green County, the daughter of Golack and Janna (Simonson) Golackson. She lived on the farm from 1954 to November of 2010 when she moved to Dodgeville. Mildred moved in 2015 to Sunset Park Place in Dubuque, Iowa, to be closer to her daughter Jan. She married Walter C. Meier on May 5, 1939 in Dubuque, Iowa, at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church. She worked at Swiss Colony for many years, and spent most of her life working with her husband on the family farm. Mildred was a lifetime member of Jordan Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. She was also a charter member of Jordan Lutheran Women of ELCA. Mildred enjoyed having family gatherings at Christmas and Birthday’s for all the families for years. She loved to bake all the Norwegian cookies and lefse. Mildred and her sister, Edna, did lots of baking for bake sales for the women of ELCA at Easter and Christmas bake sales. She enjoyed shopping with her sister Edna for many years. She enjoyed all the sports of her grandchildren; baseball, football and basketball.
She is survived by four children: Eugene (Deb) Golackson of Lena, Ill., Gerald Meier of Watertown, Jim (Connie) Meier of South Wayne, and Jan (Dennis) Helwig-House of Dubuque, Iowa; sister, Ruth Dornedon of Gratiot; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Glen Meier and sister-in-law, Elsie Meier; many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter in 1994, brothers: Harold, George, Robert, and Milford Golackson; sister, Edna Jackson, half-sister, Glady Golackson; half-brothers: Gordon, Benny, Ray, Edgar and Charles Golackson; grandson, Michael Meier in 1994; great-granddaughter, Erica Flannery in 2000; daughter-in-law, Romaine Meier; and sons-in-law, Gerald Lehnherr and Harold Helwig.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017 at Jordan Lutheran Church, where Pastor Dennis Perger officiated. Burial was in Jordan Lutheran Church Cemetery. A visitation was held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr. Monroe, Wis.
