Hello Hillsboro: 60th Labor Day fair almost here

Every year at this time, the “buzzing” has already started about all the fun and entertainment coming this weekend at Firemen’s Park.

For 60 years, Hillsboro has presented The Firemen’s Labor Day Celebration, a fundraiser that has carved great memories into the minds of local folks and visitors from all over the county.

This year is no exception. If anything, it has improved, if that’s possible, beginning Friday night with a Garden Tractor Pull and continuing all weekend right up to Monday morning with the legendary Labor Day Parade stepping off at 10:30 a.m. downtown.

Hopefully, Mother Nature will cooperate Monday as crowds line the curbs all the way out to the park, which is just gearing up for more fun and a grand finale at 2 p.m. with the selection of this year’s Labor Day Queen.

Many folks will be pleasantly surprised by the giant Craft and Vendor Fair that will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the softball diamond. More than 35 crafters and vendors will have their handy work on display, rain or shine.

Many hand-made crafts will be available, including much sought after woodworking, sewing, and other talents. It’s a good chance to get an early start on Christmas shopping, or just to pick up a few items to be displayed in your home.

There is no extra charge for visiting the craft fair. It’s all part of the huge celebration.

Other high notes this year include a full size tractor pull on Saturday night at 7 p.m., followed by an exciting fireworks display sponsored by the City of Hillsboro.

Rodeo fans are looking forward to Sunday when extra thrills will fill the air, including Barrel Racing, Bull Riding, and “Mutton Bustin” ! Bring along your cowboy hats and loudest hollering.....Ya-hoooo!

As usual, the Hillsboro Firemen have been working extremely hard to put this traditional weekend of fun together. I bet nobody 60 years ago ever dreamed that it would turn into the major entertainment event it has become. And, that’s because of the dedication shown each year by our firemen.

About the only time they are more dedicated is when on a call to save lives and property. And, all of us should thank God for that fact!

The other thing on everyone’s mind is the fact that the start of school is just around the corner.

Every year I wonder just who is more excited, the teachers or the children. The fact is that it’s not either. It’s always the appreciative parents!

The recent School Board meetings have been all about the new plans for another year of school. Nothing is taken for granted by the School Board or the dedicated folks who make it all possible five days a week, and also in the evenings at the extra activities which are so much a part of over-all education for the students.

I suppose every parent, and every town for that matter, thinks that their children, or grandchildren, are attending the best school available. I guess they are all allowed their own opinion, and that’s the way it should be.

However, they can argue the point as long as they want, we all know which school is perched on top of the list. The others are in a huge tie for second place!
