NOTE: Each week, the sports editors of swews4u.com; A.J. Gates (Grant County Herald Independent), Jason Nihles (Platteville Journal), Tom "Gunner" Gunnell (Republican Journal) and Erik Olson (The Richland Observer) will combine to nominate our "Prep Performers of the Week" in volleyball, cross country, boys soccer, girls swimming and girls golf. PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK (Oct. 25-Nov. 2)

VOLLEYBALL

1.Katelyn Hoppman, middle hitter (Southwestern, sr.) – floored 24 kills, 13 digs and five blocks in a 3-2 Division 3 sectional final victory over Wisconsin Heights to lead the Wildcats to their first ever trip to the WIAA volleyball state tournament. Hoppman also had 18 kills, 4 blocks and 4 aces in Thursday’s sectional semifinal victory over Markesan.

2.Charis Luedtke, middle hitter (Hillsboro, sr.) – had 19 kills and 3 aces to propel the Tigers to a sweep of River Ridge in Saturday’s WIAA Division 4 Onalaska sectional final as Hillsboro qualified for the state tournament. Luedtke had 25 kills and 2 aces in last Thursday’s sectional semifinal victory over Cochrane-Fountain City.

3.Molly Wubben, setter (Southwestern, sr.) – dished out 35 assists and had 12 digs in Southwestern’s sectional final victory over Wisconsin Heights. Two nights earlier Wubben had 29 assists in a sweep of Markesan.

4.Kelley Lynch, outside hitter (Richland Center, sr.) – had 19 kills in a 3-1 victory over visiting Platteville in last Thursday’s WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal. Lynch also had a team-high 11 kills in Saturday’s sectional final loss to Walworth-Big Foot.

5.Traci Kirschbaum, middle hitter (River Ridge, sr.) – slammed 19 kills and had four blocks as River Ridge defeated Wonewoc-Center in a Division 4 sectional semifinal last Thursday. On Saturday Kirschbaum had 11 kills in a sectional final loss to Hillsboro.

 

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Tyson Miehe (Darlington, so.) – was crowned the WIAA Division 3 individual boys cross country champion after completing last Saturday’s state championship race in Wisconsin Rapids in 16:02.14. Miehe's title is the first in program history and it gave the Redbirds their first team title since 1986.

 

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Molly Hanson (Dodgeville, sr.) – captured the Division 2 girls’ individual state cross country title at Saturday’s state championships with a time of 14:23.10 and helped Dodge-Point repeat as the D2 girls’ team state champion. Hanson's title came 10 years to the day since her sister, Michaela, won the program's first individual title.

 

GIRLS SWIMMING

Claire Friederick (Lancaster, jr.) and Melanie Schaefer (Platteville, fr.) – each won a team-best four medals (top 6 finish) at the Southern Lakes Conference championships last Saturday to help the Platteville/Lancaster girls’ swim team place fifth in the meet and the final conference standings. Friederick placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (:25.53), fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:44.57) and swam on Platteville/Lancaster’s fifth place 200 freestyle relay and sixth place 200 medley relay. Schaefer finished sixth in both the 200 freestyle (2:02.88) and the 500 freestyle (5:37.97). She also swam on the 200 free relay and the fourth place 400 freestyle relay.
