Pioneers finish 43 on Florida Spring Break trip

UWPlatteville senior Colin DeBoer went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Fridays 74 win over Eastern Connecticut State in Winter Haven, Florida and 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in Thursdays 72 win over MinnesotaMorris.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The UW–Platteville baseball team lost its final game of its spring break Florida trip 3–0 to the University of Western New England Golden Bears.

The game began as a pitching duel between Platteville senior Nathan Fay (0–2) and Western New England’s Paul Wetmore, with neither team being able to gain momentum for the first three innings.

Ben LaCroix broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff home run.
The Pioneers were unable to get on the board as Wetmore was able to keep the team off balance at the plate for most of the game, striking out eight and allowing only two hits in seven innings.

Western New England added two runs in the bottom of the eighth on an Aaron Rios single which scored Jared Rosenblatt and Kevin Johnson, giving the Golden Bears a 3–0 lead. Jacques Boilard got the final three outs to pick up his fourth save of the season.

The Pioneers return home before traveling to Iowa for their next game against Simpson College for a non-conference doubleheader today Wednesday.

The UW–Platteville baseball team defeated the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors 7–4 Friday in Florida, giving them their fourth victory on their Florida trip.

Senior Lucas Keller (1–0) started for the Pioneers and picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Junior Cal Krafcheck pitched three scoreless innings of relief to pick up his first career save.

The Warriors took an early lead in the second inning on a Christian Budzik sac-fly that scored John Mesagno.

UW–Platteville took the lead in the bottom half of the third inning on a two-run triple by senior shortstop Taylor Christopher that scored Mitch Marty and Jonny Frese. Senior second baseman Colin Deboer immediately added to the lead on an RBI groundout that scored Christopher.

The Warriors responded in the top of the fourth, with Mesagno scoring on a wild pitch and Pat Sirois scored on a Budzik single to tie the game at 3–3. The Warriors took the lead in the top of the sixth inning with Mesagno scoring on a Merlyn Herrera sacrifice bunt.

The Pioneers rebounded in the bottom half of the sixth with freshman outfielder Josh Moses hitting an RBI double to score Deboer. Senior first baseman Max Meitzler followed with an RBI single to score Moses. Collin Mormann fielder’s choice groundout scored Kyle Reinhart to make it 6–4. The Pioneers added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when Frese scored on a throwing error.

UW–Platteville defeated the University of Minnesota–Morris Cougars 7–2 last Thursday in Winter Haven, Florida.
Marty went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and DeBoer and Moses each had a pair of RBIs for the Pioneers in the win. ophomore Tyler Vogel (1–0) struck out nine and didn’t allow a run in 6 1/3 innings of work to pick up his first win of the season.
