Richland Center’s Logan Schmidt made it official last Wednesday that he would accept an offer to become a preferred walk-on for coach Bret Bielema’s University of Wisconsin football team during a brief ceremony.
Before a host of family members and former coaches as well as RCHS teammates and fellow classmates, Schmidt signed the formal document in the RCHS fieldhouse.
Schmidt said it has long been his desire to play for the Badgers.
Hornet football coach Greg Schoepp acknowledged Schmidt’s performance and leadership during the past season – his first as the Hornets’ head coach.
Schmidt capped his prep football career by earning all-state recognition as a defensive lineman. He was recently honored by the Wisconsin High School Football Coaches Association. He was a second team AP all-state selection despite having played on teams which never reached the playoffs.
The 6-5, 245 pounder capped his prep career with an outstanding year on the football field. He had over 140 tackles – solos and assists – and was credited with 13.5 sacks.
Schmidt thanked his family, coaches and teammates among others for helping him get the opportunity.
He follows former Hornet Bradie Ewing who recently completed his career with the Badgers after starting as a preferred walk-on.
