With non-conference wins over Southwestern and Cassville/River Ridge, the Lancaster varsity softball team is off to a 2-0 start to the 2013 season.

Under 13-year head coach Jeff Pross, the Flying Arrows kicked off the season last Friday night in Hazel Green, where they handed the host Wildcats a 6-2 loss.

The Arrows pounded out eight hits and committed two defensive errors in the game, while the Wildcats had six hits, but committed four errors.

After two scoreless innings, Lancaster got on the board first with two runs in the top of the third.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth that Southwestern answered with a two-run homer to tie the game.

Lancaster answered with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth, then added another in the seventh for good measure.

Leading Lancaster at the plate was senior outfielder Stephanie Tranel, who went 2-for-4, scored one run and had two RBIs.

Junior infielder Jena Hore also went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored one run and had one RBI.

Senior pitcher Ella Marcue picked up the win, giving up two earned runs off six hits, while striking out eight batters and walking one.

She also scored two runs in the contest and belted a double in her three at bats.

This past Monday evening, the Flying Arrows traveled to Patch Grove, and left with a 13-2 victory over host Cassville/River Ridge.

In that game, Lancaster pounded out 11 hits, including two towering homeruns from senior catcher Tiffany Leeser.

Leeser finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and accounting for four RBIs.

Tranel maintained a hot bat as well, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while junior Katelyn Reuter and sophomore  Kasey Kelly each had two RBIs on one hit each.

Marcue picked up her second victory in the pitching circle, giving up two earned runs off six hits, while striking out seven batters and walking six.
