GAME OF THE WEEK (June 22–28)

PREP BASEBALL: Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic, (Oshkosh North High School), Friday-Saturday, June 23-24

     The best senior high school baseball players in the state will gather in Oshkosh this weekend to represent their school one final time on the diamond.

     A quartet of area standouts will play for the South team in Friday and Saturday’s Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association, this week’s McDonald’s SWNews4U.com Game of the Week. 

     Shullsburg/Benton’s Chris Trejo, Highland’s John Ross Linscheid, Prairie du Chien’s Chas Sagedahl and River Valley’s Ryan Wickman will join forces with 14 other all-stars from the southern part of the state for the two-day event that will be held Oshkosh North High School.

     Trejo was named first-team All-Six Rivers West as a pitcher and infielder after leading the Miner–Zephyrs to 21–4 record and the outright West title. Linschied was named the Six Rivers West Player of Year and earned first-team all-league honors as a pitcher and shortstop after leading the Cardinals to a 17–5 mark. Sagedahl shared Southwest Wisconsin Conference honors after leading Prairie du Chien to a 20–3 record and a share of this year’s SWC title, while Wickman, son of former Major League pitcher Bob Wickman, earned first-team All-SWC honors as an outfielder for the SWC co-champion River Valley Blackhawks (18–7, 9–1).

     The WBCA All-Star Classic involves the top 72 high school seniors in the state. Divided by regions into 4 teams: North (Green Bay/Fox Valley area), East (Milwaukee Metro area), South (Madison area) andWest ( La Crosse, Stevens Point, Eau Claire, Superior area) in a two-day, round robin format.

     The South will face the North stars Friday at 4 p.m. to kick off the event. The South will return to the field to face the East at 10 a.m. on Saturday before closing out it three-game round-robin schedule at 2:30 p.m. against the West stars. The South will be coached by Highland’s Terry Cool, Stoughtoen’s Jeremy Dunnihoo and Kickapoo’s Eric Wiegel.
