GAME OF THE WEEK (June 29–July 4)

PREP BASKETBALL: Six Rivers All-Star Basketball Classic, Friday June 29

JUDA – The 12th annual Six Rivers All-Star Basketball Classic will be held at Belmont High School on Friday with the girls’ game tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow at approximately 8 p.m.

There will also be a special 3-point shooting contest held in between the games. This week’s Six Rivers All-Star Classic is the McDonald’s SWNews4U.com Game of the Week.

All proceeds from the free-will admission and other fund-raising efforts during the night go directly to the Madison Children’s Hospital in support of their events. Coaches, game personnel, referees and other participants donated their time to this event.

The Six Rivers All-Star Classic was held for the first time in 2006 as the result of a dream and hard work by retired Black Hawk boys’ basketball coach Jerry Mortimer, who designed the event and directed it until 2010. To date, the games have generated nearly $17,000 in donations.

The All-Star Classic features the top senior players from the Six Rivers Conference Western Division going head-to-head against the standouts from the Eastern Division in a game consisting of two 20-minute halves.

Shullsburg head coach Nathan Russell leads this year’s West All-Star girls’ team against the East All-Stars who will be led by Black Hawk head coach Mike Flanagan.

Area players scheduled to suit up for the West include Shullsburg’s McKailah Strang, Hattie Rennert and Cora Holland and Belmont’s Caitlyn Gilbertson and Paige Nolan. Leading the East will be Black Hawk’s Sammy Lovelace.

Joining them on the team will be Benton’s Ally Jansen, Lily Carver and Kayla Dougherty, Cassville’s Kennedy McMillan, Potosi’s Brooke McKillip, Highland’s Jessica Kosharek, and River Ridge’s Darion Brooks and Nicole Sturmer.

Other members of the East All-Stars include Argyle’s Morgan Godfrey, Pecatonica’s Jessica Erickson, Barneveld’s Abigail Sutter, Teagan Pickarts and Mia Whitish, and Juda’s Sara Jordan, Alexis Goecks and Chelsea Burkhalter.

The boys’ All-Star game pits Shullsburg head coach mark Lierman’s West squad against Pecatonica head coach Matt Fink’s East team.

Shullsburg’s Joey Meyer, Hunter Matye, Noah Wand and Lance Lierman will lead the West team, which also includes Benton’s Aaron Coffey, Highland’s John Ross Linscheid and Bray Drury; and River Ridge’s Ben Ertz.

Black Hawk’s Josh Meier will guide the East All-Stars along with Pecatonica’s A.J. Hendrickson, Logan Green and Kole Kent, Albany’s Connor Trow and Brock Gilkes, Barneveld’s Matthew Myers, Luke Evans and Mike Zouski, Monticello’s Zach Price, and Juda’s Matt Schmitt.

In the 11 years of the event, the West holds an 8–3 advantage over the East in the girls’ All-Star game, while the East boys hold an 8–3 all-time record over the West All-Stars.

Last year, the leagues split the games with the West girls prevailing by a score of 53–37 and the West boys winning 82–81 on a last-second shot.

In the 3-Point Challenge, the West out-gunned the East 138–117 to win the contest for the first time in the three years of the event.
