CUBA CITY — The combination of strong pitching, clutch hitting and solid defense helped Cuba City remain unbeaten in SWAL play as the Cubans earned a pair of hard-fought one-run victories on the baseball diamond to run their winning streak to five games.

The Cubans (8-1 overall, 5-0 SWAL) clipped Fennimore, 2-1, in a conference clash at CCHS on Tuesday, April 26, and then topped Riverdale, 3-2, back on their home field on Friday, April 29.

“Our kids battled last week against two good baseball teams. We were able to hang on and pull both of them out. I thought both games were good solid team effort wins,” said Cuba City head coach Steve Graber. “Kobe (Vosberg) and Blake (Bussan) threw very well for us in both of those games and the defense behind them was pretty good.”

Senior Cooper Johnston singled in classmate Jackson Soja to give the Cubans an early 1-0 in the second inning of Tuesday’s game.

Fennimore’s Austin Horn drove in Mason Adkins in the top of the fourth to even the score at 1-1, but the Cubans struck back with a run in the home-half of the fifth to grab a 2-1 advantage. Will Busch led off the hosts’ fifth-inning rally with a single, and then advanced to third on a pick-off attempt. Mason Reese following with a base hit to right to drive in Busch for the go-ahead run.

Vosberg (3-0) took care of things from there, shutting out the Golden Eagles in the final two frames to preserve a complete-game victory on the mound. The senior allowed a run on three hits and three walks and struck out 12 batters.

The Cubans trailed 2-0 against Riverdale on Friday until a three-run rally in the bottom of the third inning put Coach Graber’s crew ahead to stay.

Senior pitcher Blake Bussan helped his own cause by ripping a two-run triple to plate Reese and Vosberg to tie the score, and he came in for the go-ahead run on Soja’s game-winning single.

Bussan also earned a complete-game win for the Cubans, limiting the Chieftains to two first-inning runs on four hits and three walks with seven Ks.

Cuba City has a busy upcoming schedule with five games scheduled over the span of seven days. The Cubans have SWAL games at Boscobel on Thursday, May 5, and at home against Iowa-Grant on Friday, May 6, Boscobel on Tuesday, May 10, and Southwestern on Wednesday, May 11. They also have a non-conference game planned at home against Lancaster on Monday, May 9.
