QUADE'S TWO TD'S, TEAM DEFENSE PROPEL NORTH IN SMALL SCHOOLS ASG
OSHKOSH — Ellworth’s  Ashten Quade scored on an 82-yard bomb and a tipped-pass on fourth down in the second quarter to break open a scoreless defensive battle to propel the North to a 25–7 victory over the South All-Stars in the Saturday’s Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Small School (Division 4–7) All-Star Game.

The North dominated in time of possession and total yards (377–219), specifically the game’s final three quarters.

A number or area standouts played and coached for the South team in the game at UW–Oshkosh’s Titan Stadium. Participants in the three All-Star games over the weekend raised a combined $359,806 to benefit Children’s Wisconsin hospitals.

Cuba City’s Guy Kopp was the head coach, Southwestern’s Pete Murphy was the offensive coordinator, Mineral Point’s Justin Leonard was the defensive coordinator and Highland’s Shaun Reuter was a defensive assistant coach for the South.

Platteville’s Devin Digman played tight end, but did not have a catch in the loss. Potosi/Cassville linebacker Owen Vogelsberg made a game-high 10 tackles and Potosi/Cassville wide receiver Robby Roe made one catch for nine yards on the game’s final play.

Other area All-Stars included Mineral Point’s Dominik McVay (RB), Owen Ward (OLB) and Bo Hanson (LB/K), Cuba City’s Beau Kopp (QB), Chayse Barth (RB) and Carter Olson (WR), Darlington’s Easton Evenstad (CB) and Brady Horne (OLB), River Ridge’s David Nies (DE) and Logan Drone (MLB), Southwestern’s Peerson Kephart (QB) and Highland’s Max Oleson (WR).

Defense dominated the first quarter, and the South actually outgained the North All-Stars 66–5 in the first 12 minutes. However, it remained a scoreless affair into the second quarter.

The South’s De’Andre Baptist (Kenosha St. Joeseph) recovered a fumble at the North 20 on a punt return, but the North defense held and Mineral Point’s Bo Hanson missed a 35-yard field goal attempt to the right.

On the South’s next drive, Kephart led his team to the North 9-yard line, with a 23-yard completion to Anthony Nolden (Belleville) and a 12-yard run by Gage Goegli (Brodhead/Juda), but a batted passed was intercepted at the 4-yard-line by Denmark’s Hayden Konkol on the second play of the second quarter to thwart the drive.

Three plays later Ellsworth’s Ashten Quade caught the first of his two second touchdowns on an 82–yard pass from Robby Michael (Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian)

He later caught a 13-yard TD pass from Ben Wesolowski (Wittenberg–Birnamwood) on a tipped pass on 4th-and-7 to give the North a 12–0 lead with 2:31 left in the first half. The lucky bounce capped a 17-play, 90-yard drive.

The South caught a break late in the first half when Nies and Ward forced a fumble at midfield, which was recovered by Hanson with just 39 seconds left in the second quarter.

Beau Kopp completed a 12-yard pass to prep teammate Carter Olson on first down, then after a spiked ball to stop the clock, found a leaping Sam Peiffer (Cedar Grove-Belgium) in the back of the end zone for a 28-strike to make it 12–7 at halftime.

Unfortunately, that three-play, 40-yard drive was the only scoring drive the South could produce in the drive. Hanson also missed a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The game remained a 12–7 North lead into the fourth quarter before Brycen Cashin (Pacelli) scored from eight yards out with 9:46 remaining, to cap a 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, that included four compete passes by Wesolowski, including a drive-saving 12-yard pass to Quade on 4th-and-4 down to the South 13.

The South threw a pair of fourth quarter interceptions, one by McVay on halfback pass out of his own end zone, and another on a long jump ball Kephart at the North 34.

The North drove 66 yards following Brennan Dvorachek’s (Reedsville) jump ball interception to cap things off with another score, when Brady Potaczek (Stanley-Boyd) went around the left end from five yards. Reed Breckheimer (Hilbert) booted the extra point to complete the scoring. Quade led the North offense with seven catches for 127 yards and two scores.

Cashin rushed for 95 yards and a score on 15 carries. Wesolowski completed 11-of-17 for 124 yards and a touchdown and added 31 yards rushing, while Michael (Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian) threw for 86 yards on 5 of 10 passing.

Kopp threw for 106 yards on 13-of-24 passing to lead the South. Kephart finished 7-for-14 passing with 90 yards and two interceptions. Nolden (Belleville) caught a team-high five passes for 38 yards, while Peiffer (Cedar Grove–Belgium) led the way with 49 receiving yards and three catches. Sam Heicher (Lake Country Lutheran) had a team-best 22 rushing yards on five attempts.

Drone finished with six tackles for the South, while Nies recorded five tackles, including a game-high two sacks, and forced a fumble for the South. Ward (four), Horne (four), Evanstead (one), Hanson (one) and Kopp (one) each had tackles in the game as well.
