WONEWOC — The defensive-minded Hillsboro girls’ basketball team held Wonewoc–Center scoreles for the first nine minutes of Thursday’s dominating 43–22 Scenic Bluffs victory.
The host Wolves managed the three first-half points against the Tigers’ tenacious defense and just six through the first three quarters.
Delivering one of its finest defensive performances of the season, Hillsboro held a 35–6 advantage at the end of three quarters of play.
“I was really pleased with our defensive effort at Wonewoc-Center as we limited the number of good looks they got at the basket,” said Hillsboro head coach Ron Benish. “To be successful we need to keep getting better defensively as we head into a difficult part of our season.”
On offense the Tigers displayed balanced scoring as all 11 varsity players played in the game, and seven scored.
Sophomore guard Destiny Shore led the way with a season-high 13 points, three rebounds and two assists.
Senior Harli Mitchell contributed a season-best eight points and five rebounds.
Senior Kelsey Skala added eight points and two steals.
Hillsboro now has an overal record of 10–1 and improved to 3–1 in the Scenic Bluffs Conference.
The Tigers traveled to league-leading Brookwood (7–1, 5–0) on Tuesday in a makeup game from last Tuesday. Next they will host Royall (1–7, 1–4) on Thursday before traveling to Weston for a non-conference game on Monday.
