BLANCHARDVILLE – It was a split decision for the Black Hawk wrestling team at the Pecatonica/Argyle Quadrangular held at Pecatonica High School on Tuesday, Dec. 20, as the Warriors knocked off River Ridge/Cassville, 42-36, before falling to Fennimore, 66-18, during the competition.
The Warriors (4-10 overall, 1-0 in Six Rivers) won two of the four contested matches against the Timberwolves and took advantage of a 5-4 edge in forfeits to defeat the co-op squad for the first time.
Freshman Colin Novak (14-3 rec.) pinned David Seng in 38 seconds to win the 106-pound match, and sophomore Jared Pickett (12-5) followed with a pin of Marty Fischer in 3:40 in the 113-pound match to put the Warriors ahead 30-0.
Back-to-back forfeit wins by sophomore Dakota Meier (12-5) at 138 and freshman Ryan Quinn (1-11) at 145 sealed the win for the Warriors. Adding forfeit wins for Black Hawk were seniors Doug Meador (7-6) at 182, Patrick Mahoney (10-6) at 220 and Andy Stauffacher (5-8) at 285.
The Warriors weren’t so fortunate in their second match of the night against Fennimore as the Golden Eagles recorded six wins by pin, four by forfeit and one by injury default to roll to a 66-18 decision.
Five of Fennimore’s six falls came in the first period, while all three of the Warriors’ wins came on pins in the first period as well.
Pickett stuck Jason Wolf in 37 seconds at 113 for the quickest pin for Black Hawk. Meier flattened Dillin Aide in 53 seconds at 138, and freshman Beau Holland (4-7) pinned Tyree Edge in 1:23 at 126 for the Warriors other wins.
At Beloit, on Saturday, Dec. 17, Colin Novak at 106 and Patrick Mahoney at 220 each went 5-0 on the day to lead Black Hawk at the Turner Dual Meet Tournament.
The Warriors finished fourth as a team after going 2-3 on the mats. They opened the day with wins over Columbus, 44-21, and Pecatonica/Argyle, 42-36, to make the championship bracket where they fell to champion Whitewater, 57-22, host Turner, 54-21, and Union Grove, 47-30.
Jared Pickett and Dakota Meier went 4-1 for the Warriors, while Crystal Novak (5-9) was 3-2.
