MOUNT HOREB — The season came to end for the Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster gymnastics team at last Thursday night’s WIAA Division 2 Mount Horeb Sectional.
    The young Hillmen finished fifth out of eight teams with a score of 127.1.
    The host Vikings won the sectional title going away with a score of 138.2, while Jefferson (131.825) placed second to earn the other team state berth.
    The top five individuals in each event, also advanced to the WIAA Gymnastics State Championships that will be held Friday and Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.
    P/B/L’s top individual finisher was Lancaster senior Allison Stader, who placed seventh on the uneven bars (8.1) and 15th in the all-around (31.55).
    Belmont sophomore Lizzy Haag, who was a indivdiual state qualifier a year ago on the bars, tied for 10th at Thursday’s sectional meet on the bars with a score of 8.025.
    “We had a very young team this year,” said Hillmen head coach Jessica Hill. “They far exceeded my expectations. At the end of last year with the large amount of talent we lost, I doubt many thought we would even be in the position to make a run for a State birth. I am sad two of the seniors that helped the underclassmen be so successful will not be here next year, but I am excited about the potential success this young team can have in the future.”
