COBB — Iowa–Grant’s opportunity to pull into a first-place tie in the SWAL standings was short-lived.
The Panthers spotted league-leading Mineral Point five runs in the top of the first inning and never recovered.
Bad got worse as I–G committed 10 errors in a game that ultimately ended in a lop-sided, five-inning 13–2 loss.
Junior Beth Wood, last year’s SWAL Player of the Year, limited the Panthers to just two runs on nine hits in the five-inning complete game victory. She also went 3-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs for the Pointers, who improved to 10–1 overall, 7–0 in the SWAL.
Stanton (6–3) took the loss after allowing 13 runs, only three of which were earned, on 11 hits in five innings.
Junior Brittanie Lawinger (2x3) and sophomore Kylie Moneypenny (2x2) each had two hits for Iowa–Grant.
Monday night Coach Deanna Fulton’s Panthers bounced back from last week’s loss with a sweep of second-place Boscobel.
I–G outlasted the host Bulldogs 4–2 in 11 innings to win the opener, then rallied for an 8–7 victory in the nightcap.
The Panthers improved to 8–3 overall and 7–2 in the SWAL, two games behind undefeated Mineral Point (9–0 SWAL).
The Bulldogs sent Monday’s opener into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Iowa–Grant took a 2–1 lead in the top of the 10th on Ashley Liddicoat’s RBI single but, the Bulldogs once again tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an Esters RBI ground out.
Senior Lara Daentl tripled to lead off the 11th and later scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Taylor Jackson singled, stole second and scored on Lawinger’s RBI single to add an insurance run.
Stanton went the distance allowing just one earned run in 11 innings to collect the win. Stanton also collected the win in the nightcap — her eighth of the year — went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
Jackson doubled and also drove in a pair of runs. Moneypenny and Daentl each went 2-for-3.
Last Monday night the Panthers improved to 5–1 in the SWAL with a sweep of visiting Darlington, 3–2 and 19–5.
Senior Jackie Olson ripped a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to score Lawinger and deliver the walk-off win.
Moneypenny slammed a solo home run, her second of the season, in the fourth inning.
Junior catcher Rheanne Engelke went 2-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored in the lop-sided nightcap victory.
Liddicoat went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Lawinger walked four times and scored four runs.
