VIROQUA – Cuba City running backs Mitchell Splinter and Kordell Stillmunkes each scored three touchdowns and the Cubans’ defense pitched a shutout in a 48-0 non-conference victory over Viroqua in their season opener at VHS on Friday, Aug. 21.
Splinter rolled up 160 yards on just 12 carries and scored on runs of 2, 68 and 20 yards, while Stillmunkes had touchdown runs of 41 and 6 yards and also caught a 6-yard TD pass from quarterback Kyle Bass.
After Stillmunkes opened the scoring with his 41-yard jaunt, Splinter hit pay dirt on a 2-yard blast and a 68-yard sprint to put the Cubans (1-0 overall) comfortably ahead.
Bass, a senior in his first start as varsity quarterback, capped the first-quarter scoring by teaming with Anthony Zilliox on a 22-yard TD strike to make it 27-0.
Stillmunkes added a TD run and a TD catch in the second quarter to give the Cubans a 41-0 halftime advantage, and Splinter closed the scoring with a 20-yard run in the third quarter.
The Blackhawks (0-1) could get little going offensively against the stout Cuban D, managing just 21 yards on the ground the entire night while getting held off the scoreboard.
Cuba City resumes an old rivalry on Friday, Aug. 28, when the Cubans return home to host Lancaster (1-0) in a tough non-conference contest, starting at 7 p.m.
The defending WIAA Division 5 state champion Flying Arrows held off Fennimore, 21-13, in their season opener on Friday evening.
