Darlington girls shine in the sun

    DARLINGTON – With conference meets and regionals just around the corner, area track and field athletes relished the opportunity to perform in the sunshine at Monday’s Redbird Invitational.
    Host school Darlington won seven of the 18 events en route to the girls’ team title with 157.5 points, while Lancaster won seven events to take home the boys’ title with 180 points.
    Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg (96 points) added three first-place finished to take fourth in the girls’ meet, while Black Hawk (57) and Belmont (40.5) each won two events to place fifth and seventh, respectively.
    The Redbirds (119.5) also garnered three firsts to finish third overall in the boys’ standings, and Belmont (46) won two events to take sixth. The BSMS tri-op placed fourth (71.5) and the Warriors were eighth (15) at the meet.
    Earning firsts for the Lady Redbirds were Christa Wamsley in the 1,600-meter run (5:43.92), Cheyenne Wolfe in the 3,200 (13:02.84), Kelsey Wiegel in the shot put (32’6.5”), Cassidy Chambers in the pole vault (8’0”) and Carly Reilly in the long jump (15’11.75”).
    Reilly also joined with Carly Langkamp, Claire Scott and Alison Wedig to place first in the 1,600 relay in 4:12.25, while Langkamp, Wedig and Scott teamed with Rebecca Mathias to finish first in the 800 relay in 1:53.19.
    Chambers also placed second (4’10”) in the high jump.
    BSMS got firsts from Brittany Davis in the 400-meter dash (:59.87), Abagail Davis in the 110 high hurdles (:17.12) and Sarah Redfearn in the 300 low hurdles (:50.34). A. Davis also placed third in the 300 hurdles (:53.52) and in the long jump (15’3.5”).
    B. Davis was second in the 800 (2:26.01) and fourth in the high jump (4’8”).
    Jen Wellnitz led Black Hawk by placing first in the 200 (:26.36) and the triple jump (33’2”), and placing second in the long jump (15’10”).
    Jordyn Kamps paced Belmont with firsts in the 100 (:13.07) and discus (105’10”), a second in the 200 (:27.22) and a sixth in the 400 (1:04.77).
    Kyle Johnson picked up a pair of firsts for the Redbirds in the 110 high hurdles (:15.36) and 300 intermediate hurdles (:42.78), and also earned a fourth in the long jump (18’0.25”).
    Tucker Wedig also won two events for the Braves with firsts in the shot put (47’0”) and the discus (136’7”).
    Tyson Miehe, who on Friday was named the Male Athlete of the Meet at the Deerfield Invitational after winning three events (see results below) and on Saturday was crowned Prom King, added a first for the Redbirds in the 800 (2:00.32).
    Jayden Rufenacht was second in the 100 (:11.59) and fourth in the 200 (:24.03) for the Warriors.
    Patrick Dixon led BSMS by placing second in the 110 (:16.14) and fifth in the triple jump (37’3”), while Reid Schwartz was third in the shot (42’10.5”) and the discus (119’7”).
    Listed below are the other place winners from Thursday’s meet along with the results of the other track and field meets that were held over the past week.
    Darlington and Belmont will participate in Boscobel’s Sparky Reynolds Invitational on Friday, May 10, beginning at 3:30 p.m.; while Black Hawk and the BSMS tri-op will compete at the Belleville Invitational that same day, starting at 4:15 p.m.
    The Six Rivers Conference Meet will be held at UW-Platteville on Monday, May 13, starting at 4 p.m.
    Darlington will host the SWAL Meet on Tuesday, May 14, also starting at 4 p.m.
