GALENA - The season came to an end for the Darlington Redbirds boys’ golf team with a sixth-place finish at the WIAA Regional Meet hosted by Southwestern at the Galena Public Golf Course on Tuesday, May 21.
Senior Alex Schulte finished 15th overall individually with a round of 88 to lead the Redbirds, who finished in a tie for sixth-place in the team standings with a score of 376.
Junior A.J. Brandt placed 18th with a 92, while senior Chase Tuescher and junior Kyrin Halverson rounded out the ‘Birds scoring by finishing 27th and 28th , respectively, with scores of 98 and 99. Junior Steven Cotter was fifth on the team at 100.
“We knew it would be a tough regional when you add Lancaster and Parkview to our conference lineup. As far as the team goes, we needed all five guys to really step it up on a difficult golf course to have a shot at going on; and, while we shot about where we have all season, if wasn’t enough,” explained Darlington head coach Dave Jacobson.
Lancaster cruised to the regional team title with a score of 328 behind individual regional medalist Zach Hentrich’s one-under round of 71. Parkview was a distant second at 352, while Southwestern placed third (358) and Argyle/Pecatonica took fourth (362) to earn sectional berth.
Iowa-Grant senior Derek Peat was third overall with a 77 to earn the first individual sectional berth, while Cuba City senior Alex Stewart (79) and sophomore Drew Zimmerman (82) and Mineral Point sophomore Taylor Ryman (85) nabbed the other three berths.
“Our three seniors all had solid seasons in spite of the late start we had due to the weather. Alex finished ninth in conference to earn second-team (All-SWAL) honors. Chase played the number three man all season and qualified for the Southwest Cup at Lancaster. Andrew Jacobson got a chance to play some varsity meets and faired well for the most part,” boasted Coach Jacobson about his seniors.
