Senior Riley Blair (back) defeated Logan Schmitz at 145 pounds to help Fennimore earn a 4919 victory at Mineral Point Friday night. The team victory secured the Golden Eagles fourth-straight SWAL duals meet conference championship.

MINERAL POINT — The Fennimore wrestling team took advantage of four forfeits and won six of the 10 contested matches to score a 49–19 victory over host Mineral Point in the final regular season dual of the season.

With the victory, the second-ranked Golden Eagles (14–3) clinched a fourth-straight Southwest Wisconsin Activities League duals conference championship.

“We captured our fourth consecutive conference title versus a well coached Mineral Point team,” said Fennimore head coach Chad Steldt. “Both squads matched up their best kids. We will see these guys four or five more times before the year is over. Hats off to Mineral Point and their squad it was a great dual.”

Freshman Brody Lee collected a forfeit at 106 to even the match at 6–6, then Luke Blair scored a 10–4 victory over Wyatt Evans at 113.

Sophomore Mason Lull’s pin of Chandler Workman at 120 gave the Golden Eagles 15–6 lead after four matches.

“Both Mason Lull and Luke Blair did great jobs attacking their shots,” said Steldt.

Point got back in the dual with an overtime victory at 126 and a pin at 132, but junior Trevor Wanek regained the momentum for Fennimore with a 10–5 win over Nolan Springer at 138 that began a string of five straight Fennimore wins.

Senior Riley Blair defeated Logan Schmitz at 145,  sophomore Maguire Fitzgerald was a 16–3 major decision winner over Mason Hughes at 152 and sophomore Will Ahnen collected a forfeit victory at 160.

Senior Tyler Klaas’ pin of Kyle Vondra made it 37–15 and put the match out of reach.

Riley Workman scored Mineral Point’s last victory with a 10–2 major decision over Fennimore senior Trevor Neuroth at 182, but Brayden Leffler (195) and Cameron Allen (220) picked up forfeits for the Eagles to close out the night.

“Wanek notched an undefeated dual meet run with a clean match verse a solid freshman and Riley Blair had an exciting match against a technical wrestler in Schmitz,” added Steldt. “Tyler Klaas did a great job riding and grinding out a bar to pin his kid in the first period. He is really starting to wrestle within himself.”

NEXT UP: Coach Steldt’s Eagles will travel to Mineral Point this Saturday to compete in the SWC–SWAL Clash Conference tournament. Fennimore has won three straight Clash titles, winning last year’s championship with 296 team points.

“If you want to see the best wrestling in Southwest Wisconsin, find Mineral Point High School on Saturday,” said Steldt. “There will be several state championship caliber matches taking place.”
