Fennimore’s Trevor Neuroth went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs, and picked up the win on the mound in Friday’s 14–13 comeback victory over Westby in the opening round of the American Legion Class A Prairie du Chien Regional Tournament.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — The Fennimore U19 American Legion baseball team opened last weekend’s Class A Prairie du Chien Regional with a wild 14–13 comeback victory over Westby.

Fennimore trailed 6–0 through four innings, but scored 14 runs in its final three at-bats, including seven in the top of the seventh, then held off a seventh-inning rally from Westby to hang on for a one-run victory.

“The team showed a lot of character and heart in the comeback against Westby and that helped us make a nice run in the regional tournament,” said Fennimore coach Heath Ahnen.

With a 92-degree game-time temperature and the heat-index over 100 degrees, Fennimore battled the weather as well as Westby.

The 184s scored five in the top of the fifth inning to get within striking distance. Will Ahnen had a two-out, two-run double to jump-start the comeback, and Trevor Neuroth followed that with an RBI double of his own. Tyler Hach delivered an RBI single, and after Warren Adam singled, Derek Turben drove in a run with Fennimore’s fifth-straight, two-out hit to make it 6–5.

Ahnen tied the game an inning later with an RBI single, and Hach’s sac fly gave Fennimore a brief 7–6 lead.

A Fennimore error and three walks opened the door for a big inning and Westby regained a 10–7 lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. But Fennimore had one last rally in the top of the seventh. The first six batters of the inning reached and scored.

Trevor Wanek’s RBI double made it a two-run game, and Druw Fifrick tied the game with a two-run double. Ahnen singled and Neuroth belted his third double of the game to make it 11–10. Tyler Hach’s ground out drove in another run and starting pitcher Noah Hromadka’s RBI double made it 12–10.

Gavyn Meuch, who began the rally with a leadoff single, doubled down the right field line for his second hit of the inning and drove in two more runs.

Westby made it a one-run game on Hanson’s RBI single and had the tying run on third and the game-winning run on first, but Michael Schaefer recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and earn the save.
