WHITEWATER — Five members of the Iowa–Grant/Highland wrestling team placed in the top six and the Panthers finished 10th out of 43 teams at the two-day Mid-States Tournament this past weekend.
Junior Cody Rider turned in the top individual performance, placing third out of 25 wrestlers at 220 pounds.
Rider (20–4) opened the tournament with a pair of pins before he was pinned with 10 seconds left in his quarterfinal match with Elkhorn’s Dakota Johnson.
Rider then rattled off four straight victories, two more by pin, culminating with a 3–1 decision over Kaukauna’s Tyler Nelson in the third-place match.
Senior Tucker Sarbacker (19–4) went 4–2 and placed fourth at 138 pounds.
He suffered a 5–4 loss to Mukwonago’s Hank Mattson in the semifinals, but advanced to the third-place match with a 7–4 consolation victory over Pulask’s Michael Frehse.
Senior Derek Peat (16–4) also went 4–2, but placed fifth at 195.
Senior Heavyweight Ben McFall (14–4) dropped a 9–6 decision to Freeport’s Kendal Parker in the second round, but fought back to finish fifth at 285 pounds.
Luke Nowak (16–8) finished sixth at 145.
Kaukauna scored 179 points, on the strength of nine place-winners, including two runner-ups, to edge Elkhorn (175) for the team title.
Iowa–Grant/Highland returns to action Friday when the Panthers travel to neighboring Fennimore for a SWAL dual.
The Panthers will then have an eight-day layoff before competing at the Lake Geneva Invitational.
