MINERAL POINT — Iowa–Grant/Highland seniors Max Maylor, Brady Peat and Clayton Kite will end their successful prep wrestling careers this weekend at the 75th annual WIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament.

Maylor (42–1) earned his fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament by winning the 160-pound title at Saturday’s WIAA D3 Mineral Point Sectional.

Maylor recorded back-to-back pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, then dominated Fennimore sophomore Will Ahnen 20–5 in the finals.

Peat (41–3) punched his third straight trip to state by pinning Lancaster junior Troy Klein (37–7) at 3:19 of the second period of the 182-pound sectional championship match. He pinned De Soto’s Cezar Garcia and Orfordville Parkvie’s Gavon Brown (30–10) in his first two matches.

Kite (15–3), who missed most of the regular season with a shoulder injury continued his late season push and earned his second straight trip to state with a second-place finish at 152 pounds.

Kite pinned Coulee Christian’s Zane Miller in the quarterfinals, then defeated Pecatonica/Argyle’s East Schraepfer 9–8, before being pinned by Fennimore sophomore Maguire Fitzgerald (28–9) in the finals. But Kite bounced back with an 8–2 decision over Marshall’s Dylan Horstmeyer (42–11) to finish second.

“I was very happy getting all three guys to state,” said Iowa–Grant/Highland head coach Ryan Allen. “Max and Brady looked as good as I have seen them. They both have set very high goals and have worked very hard towards reaching them. Clay had a slow start to the day but came back and wrestled a very good match in the wrestleback.  All three of these guys have been to state and know what it is like to be wrestling up in the Kohl Center. Now we just take it one match at a time, wrestle our style and have fun.”

Maylor and Peat will have first-round byes when the Division 3 tournament begins Friday night at 7:15 p.m.

Kite, who went 33–13 and qualified for state at 145 pounds a year ago as a junior, will face Oostburg senior Josiah Maatillor (29–10) in Thursday night’s preliminary round.

Maylor, the top-ranked wrestler at 160 in Division 3, will open his state tournament, with a quarterfinal match Friday morning against either Coleman sophomore John Bieber (29–12) or Mishicot senior Sawyer Young (18–6). Maylor placed third at 152 pounds as a junior.

Peat, who is ranked number one in Division 3 at 182, will face either Mondovi senior Bryce Johnson (33–6) or Bonduel senior Jacob Banker (35–2) in his opening quarterfinal match on Friday.

The D2/3 quarterfinal session is scheduled to begin Friday at approximately 11:15 a.m.
