Panthers claim three titles at SWC/SWAL Clash
Maylor wins third Clash title; Peat, Kite join teammate on top of the podium

IowaGrant senior Clayton Kite, who missed most of the year with a shoulder injury, won the 152-pound conference title at Saturdays SWC/SWAL Clash at Mineral Point High School to help the Panthers finish fourth out of 13 teams.

MINERAL POINT — Max Maylor’s season-long domination continued Saturday at the SWC/SWAL Clash conference tournament at Mineral Point.

The top-ranked Highland senior went 4–0 and cruised to the 160-pound conference championship, his third consecutive Clash title.

His Iowa–Grant/Highland senior teammates Brady Peat and Clayton Kite also won individual titles as the Panthers tied SWC duals champion River Valley for fourth place at the 13-team event with 196 points.

Reigning champion Fennimore retained its crown, winning a fourth-consecutive Clash title with 249 points.

SWC duals runner-up Lancaster finished second with 214 points, edging SWC duals champion Prairie du Chien (212) by two points.

Belmont/Platteville senior Isaac Wiegel won his second straight Clash title with a 5–1 decision over River Valley’s Caleb Radtke in the 120-pound championship match. Wiegel was one of just six healthy wrestlers for the Braves, who finished 12th with 70 points.

Maylor (36–1), who won the 152-pound Clash title a year ago and the 132-pound title as a sophomore, captured the 160-pound championship on Saturday.

After a first-round bye, Maylor pinned Belmont/Platteville senior Joshua Taber, then pinned Dodgeville’s John Phalen before scoring an impressive 22–10 major decision over Prairie du Chien’s Nick Rogge (37–5) in the finals.

“Max is a very talented kid who has worked very hard during the last four years,” said Iowa–Grant/Highland head coach Ryan Allen. “He was dominate all day, beating some tough kids along the way.”

Maylor, who is a three-time state qualifier, is currently ranked number 1 in Division 3 at 160 pounds.

Peat (35–3) claimed his second Clash title with an impressive run through the 182-pound bracket. After a first-round bye, he recorded back-to-back pins over Riverdale’s Terry Hrubes and Dodgeville’s Zakery Weber, before he notched an 8–2 win over Lancaster junior Troy Klein (32–5) in the finals.

“Brady looked very good today,” said Allen. “He has been working hard all season and he seems to be right where he needs to be for the post season.”

Peat, who finished second at 170 pounds at last year’s Clash after winning the 160-pound title as a sophomore, is currently ranked first in the state in Division 3 at 182 pounds.

Kite (9–1), who missed most of the season due to a shoulder injury, returned to the Iowa–Grant/Highland lineup Saturday and wrestled his way to the 152-pound title.

Kite, who finished fourth at 145 at the Clash as a junior, pinned Mineral Point’s Mason Hughes in 21 seconds in the quarterfinals, then put Dodgeville’s Noah Durst on his back in 41 seconds in the semis. He capped his dominant tournament with a third-period pin of Fennimore’s Maguire Fitzgerald in the finals.

“It sure is nice having Clay back and wrestling at 100 percent,” said Allen. “He looked very good Saturday and beat a solid wrestler in the finals. It will be fun watching him the next few weeks.”

Junior Alec Zimmer (21–12) had a nice day for the Panthers, placing third at 113 pounds. He went 3–1 on the day and blanked Mineral Point’s Wyatt Evans 12–0 in the 113-pound third-place match.

Highland junior Drew Hennessey (35–4), who entered the tournament with two losses and ranked third in Division 3 at 220, injured his knee in a semifinal loss to Riverdale’s Garret Wilmot, and had to forfeit his third-place match to Darlington/Black Hawk senior Brody Milz.

“Drew, unfortunately injured his knee in the semis and was forced to sit the rest of the tournament,” said Allen. “It seems to be an injury he will be able to overcome by Saturday, but I guess we will have to see how it goes. He is a tough kid and it will take a lot to keep him from competing.”

Senior Noah Pennekamp (23–14) finished fourth at 132. Sophomore Jason Sedbrook (18–19) placed sixth at 138, while freshman Marcus Hanson (3–7) finished seventh at 106.

The Panthers will travel to the WIAA Division 3 Lancaster Regional on Saturday.

Wiegel wins second title for

Belmont/Platteville

Wiegel improved to 37–3 on the season with four straight wins. He used a bye, a 12–0 major decision over Richland Center’s Isaac Jones and a 14–3 major decision over Prairie du Chien’s Keenan Holley to reach the finals. He then battled for a 5–1 victory over Radtke to claim his second conference title.

Wiegel is currently ranked fourth in Division 2 at 120 pounds.

“I was very impressed with Isaac winning another Clash title,” said Belmont/Platteville head coach Andrew Campbell. “ I knew it was going to be a tough match against Radke.  Last year, we bumped Isaac up to wrestle Radke in the duel with River Valley and Radke beat him, so it was nice to get some revenge. We will most likely have some tough matches with him the next couple weeks.”

Platteville sophomore William Schaefer (24–10) went 3–1 and finished third at 182 pounds. He suffered a semifinal loss to Lancaster junior Troy Klein, but rebounded with a pin of Dodgeville/Mineral Point’s Zackery Weber in the third-place match.

Freshman Riley Christenson (21–14) went 2–2 and placed sixth at 195 pounds.

Senior Joshua Taber (14–10) finished eighth at 160 pounds after going 2–3.

The Braves will travel to Spring Green on Saturday for the WIAA Division 2 River Valley Regional.
