MINERAL POINT — Iowa–Grant’s senior trio of Tucker Sarbacker, Derek Peat and Ben McFall, as well as sophomore Luke Nowak, are headed to state.
     Sarbacker (37–6) won the 138-pound title at Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 Mineral Point Sectional to earn a first-round bye when the D3 state tournament begins Thursday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.
     Sarbacker, who will be making his third trip to state, won the 138-pound championship match 3–1 with a takedown as time expired against Riverdale sophomore Jared Roen, avenging an overtime loss to Roen two weeks ago at the Clash.
     “Tucker had a great tournament, beating three solid opponents,” said Allen. “I think his mental toughness and constant attacking was key for him. The way he has been wrestling the last couple weeks makes me very excited to see him at the state tournament.”
     Peat (35–8) and McFall (34–6) each lost in the finals at 195 and 285 respectively, but each finished second.
     “Both Derek and Ben had good days, but ran into very good wrestlers in the finals and came up a bit short,” said Allen. “I’m looking for them to be ready go this weekend.”
     Nowak (32–14) qualified for his first state tournament with a third-place finish at 145 pounds. After a semifinal loss he battled through the consolation bracket with back-to-back wins to secure his state berth.
     “I was very pleased with how the four qualifiers wrestled on Saturday,” said Panthers’ head coach Ryan Allen. “I thought we wrestled very well I am happy for the four guys who qualified as they have worked very hard to get to this point.”
     Junior Cody Rider (37–8) just missed out giving the Panthers five state qualifiers, losing his 220-pound third-place match to Fennimore’s Logan Chappell.
     Sophomore Shania Sarbacker (21–15), who became the first girl to ever qualify for the Mineral Point sectional a week ago, finished tied for fifth at 106 pounds.
