Arrows take down Cubans to improve to 20

LANCASTER – With a very efficient offensive performance and an equally aggressive defensive effort, the Lancaster varsity football team improved to 2-0 this season with a decisive 35-7 victory over visiting Cuba City last Friday night.
The Flying Arrows scored five touchdowns on their first eight possessions, and was forced to punt just once during the entire non-conference contest.

Lancaster’s offense managed 350 total yards on 57 plays for an average of 6.1 yards per play. They got 239 yards rushing on 44 attempts, and threw for another 111 yards on eight completions.

Junior fullback Evan Gates found the end zone three times in the first half, scoring on runs of 4, 4 and 18 yards, and finished the half with 105 yards and three scores on 13 carries. He added 15 yards on five more carries in the second half, giving him 120 yards total on 18 carries.

Junior quarterback Evan Straka found the end zone twice in the second half, scoring on runs of 27 and 3 yards, and finished the night with 43 yards rushing on 16 attempts.

Senior halfback Tanner Reuter carried the ball four time for 58 yards, while junior Ty Mayne collected 20 yards on three carries.

Through the air, Straka completed 8-of-13 passing attempts for 111 yards. His top target was Tanner Reuter, who had four catches for 68 yards, while fellow senior Drew Reuter added three catches for 33 yards. Gates had one catch for a 10-yard gain.

Sophomore kicker Tanner Oyen was 3-for-4 on extra-point kicks, while Tanner Reuter ran in a two-point conversion.
Cuba City, who had 201 yards of total offense on 49 plays, had 182 on the ground and 19 through the air.

Junior Kordell Stillmunkes finished the night with 175 yards rushing and one touchdown on 28 attempts, while completing 2-of-6 passing attempts in the second half for 19 yards.

The Lancaster defense forced Cuba City to punt four times, while recovering one fumble on nine possessions.
The Flying Arrows were constantly putting pressure on Cuba City quarterback Isaac Meier, and for the most part did a good job containing Stillmunkes.

Leading the Lancaster defense with seven tackles each were senior linebacker Justin Allen and junior nose guard Gabe Hudson. Hudson also had four tackles for a loss, while Allen had 1.5.

Coming away with five tackles, 1.5 for a loss was senior Jacob Ihm, while junior Jacob McCabe also had five tackles and fellow junior Ethan Klar had two for a loss.

The Arrows played a relatively clean game, committing just two penalties and turning the ball over once. They had just one punt to go along with 20 first downs and a 2-for-3 success rate on fourth down.

This Friday night, the Arrows (2-0) will again be at home, as they host Black River Falls (0-2), who is coming off a 20-6 loss to Tomah, after starting the season with a 48-6 loss to Sparta.
