The Lancaster varsity volleyball brought home the silver division championship plaque from the Janesville Invite on Aug. 24-25. Most recently, the Flying Arrows finished first in last Saturday's La Crosse Aquinas Invitational with a record of 6-0.

LANCASTER - They may not have opened up play in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference like they had hoped, but the Lancaster varsity volleyball team still looks to have a lot of talent and a lot going for them this fall.

Last Thursday night in an SWC opener for both teams, the visiting Hillmen from Platteville left town with a 3-2 victory over the host Flying Arrows.

Coach Tiff Michalkiewicz’s squad took a 25-17 victory in game one, lost the second by a score of 25-13, then won the third, 25-22.

The Flying Arrows just couldn’t put the Hillmen away though, as Platteville won the fourth game, 25-23, then completed the comeback with a decisive 15-1 final in the fifth set.

Senior outside hitter Courtney Mumm led Lancaster with 14 kills and four blocks, while senior setter Hayley Hentrich dished out 36 assists.

Jena Vesperman and Jena Hore each finished with 17 digs, while Katrina Polkinghorn served up three aces.

This past Saturday, the Flying Arrows participated in the La Crosse Aquinas Tournament, where they won the championship title by going 6-0 on the day.

After beating Holmen, Aquinas, Seneca and Independence in pool play, the Arrows knocked off Luther, 2-0, to advance to the championship match.

Getting a second shot at Aquinas, Lancaster again came out victorious, this time with scores of 25-16, 26-17 and 15-10.

Mumm finished the day with 40 total kills, while Vesperman had six blocks.

Hentrich dished out a whopping 111 total assists, while Polkinghorn had 11 ace serves and 41 digs. Sophomore Paige Duncan also finished the day with 41 digs.

This Thursday night the Flying Arrows will host Richland Center, then host the Lancaster Invite on Saturday.
