PATCH GROVE – There will be no repeat this year.

With a second-place finish at last Saturday’s D3 River Ridge Regional, the Lancaster varsity wrestling team will not move on to defend last year’s WIAA D3 team state championship.

Moving on to team sectionals will be Mineral Point, who won the regional title with 240 points.

The Arrows were 37 points behind with a team score of 203, while Fennimore finished a close third with 197 points.

The good news for Lancaster wrestling fans though is the fact that seven members have extended their season by finishing amongst the top two in their respective weight class, and will be wrestling at this Saturday’s individual sectional meet held in Necedah.

Seniors Lizzy Austin, Kyle Mezera, Trenton Cornell and Ethan Soderstrom will be making the trip to Necedah, as will juniors Cole Martin and David Chadd, as well as sophomore Dustin Reynolds.

Winning regional titles on Saturday were Mezera, Martin, Cornell, Soderstrom and Chadd, while Austin and Reynolds each finished second.

Mezera improved his season record to 40-2, going 3-0 on Saturday.

In his championship match, the 126-pound senior won a 6-2 decision over Mineral Point’s Frank Baker (22-11).

At 152 pounds, Cornell also went 3-0 on the day, and improved his season record to 37-1.

Cornell matched up against Mineral Point’s Scott Pittz (30-11) in his championship match, and won a 7-2 decision.

At 170 pounds, Soderstrom defeated Brian Halverson (32-13) of Iowa-Grant/Highland with a first-period pin, improving his season record to 17-3.

Martin kept his unbeaten streak alive and improved to 17-0 on the year with a second-period pin of Mineral Point’s Jake Riley (28-11) in his 132-pound championship match.

At 182 pounds, Chadd won a 14-6 major decision over Cody Rider of Iowa-Grant/Highland in his championship match, improving his season record to 40-2.

Austin (19-20), wrestling at 106 pounds, lost to Mineral Point’s Marcus Shannon by injury default, then won by rule of Shania Sarbacker of Iowa-Grant/Highland for second place.

For sophomore Dustin Reynolds, he improved his season record to 25-11, but lost to Mineral Point’s Ross Siegenthaler (35-6) by a 12-0 major decision in his championship match.

By rule, he finished second over Fennimore’s Dillin Aide, whom he pinned in his semifinal match.

Looking to make a return trip back to the state tournament are Soderstrom, Cornell, Mezera, Martin and Chadd, all of whom wrestled at the Kohl Center last year.

In order to make a return trip to the state meet, the wrestlers must finish among the top three in their weight class at Saturday’s Necedah Sectional.

Saturday’s sectional begins at 10 a.m.
