NEW GLARUS — The Platteville Summer Swim Team returned to action last Wednesday at the Sugar River Triangular in New Glarus.

The host Sugar River Rapids scored a combined 804 points, Platteville was second with 522, while Bishops Bay finished third with 290.

“I’m very pleased with how the swimmers are progressing,” said Platteville head coach Matt Wunderlin. “There were no surprises with technique that needs to be worked on, and our fitness is starting to come together. We were a lot stronger in the second half of our races than what we’ve seen in past meets. This is probably why some of those records fell. We’ve still got to a little ways to go, but we should be in a good spot before the season is over.”

Platteville established four new team records at last Wednesday’s meet.

Kate Pronschinske finished second in the 9–10 girls 100 individual medley with a new record time of 1:36.36, breaking a 20-year-old Platteville age division record set in 1999. She also finished second in the 25 butterfly.

Titus Wunderlin finished second in the 13–14 boys 100 individual medley with a new record time of 1:18.73, that eclipsed the mark set by his older brother Bryce just last summer. He also finished second in the 13–14 boys 50 backstroke and 50 breaststroke.

Three-time WIAA state qualifier Madison Albert-Nelson broke her own team record by winning the  15–18 girls 100 individual medley with a time of 1:11.80. She also won the 15–18 girls 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke.

Lastly the Platteville 11–12 boys 200 freestyle relay team of Tristan Pink, Rusty Wruck, Marcus Kreul and Abd Ul-Haq broke a 2011 team record with a winning time of 2:43.52.

Sierra Wunderlin won the 15–18 girls 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke.

“We were a little short on participation in some of the younger age groups, with nobody swimming in any of the six and under divisions and only a handful in the 10 and under,” added coach Wundelrin. “It made it impossible to compete with Sugar River, who are especially strong in those younger ages. We did well with what we had, and I’m proud of each and every swim, but swimming is a team sport and there was no way we could get the points needed to beat our host.”

Platteville also swam at the Monroe Dr. Stiles Invitational on Saturday. The Platteville swimmers returned to action Tuesday at Jefferson. Results from Monroe and Jefferson will appear in next week’s issue of The Platteville Journal.

Platteville closes out the summer swim season by hosting the six-team Tom Caccia Invitational, Saturday, July 27 at the Platteville Family Aquatic Center.
