Hillmen also win Lancaster SWC meet two days later

LANCASTER — Two more meets, two more team titles.

The Platteville golf team shot a combined 336 to win Saturday’s 10-team Lancaster Early Bird Invitational.

Monday afternoon, coach John Sponsler’s Hillmen returned to the Lancaster Country Club and opened Southwest Wisconsin Conference play with a first-place finish at the first of six regular season SWC mini meets.

In windy cold conditions, four Hillmen placed in the top six at Saturday’s 18-hole event.

Senior Cade Rohrbach shot an 8-over-par 79 to finish second, three shots back of Lancaster freshman phenom Noah Kirsch, who claimed medalist honors with a 5-over-par 75 in his high school debut.

Platteville senior Andy Eggers shot an 82 to tie for third place with Mineral Point’s Simon Mitchell.

Senior Isaiah Altfillisch carded an 84 to place fifth, followed junior teammate Nate Busch, who shot 91 to place sixth. Sophomore Connor Timlin shot a non-counting 116 to tied for 28th place.

Lancaster dominated the competition, winning the team title by 43 strokes over runner-up Mineral Point (379). Argyle/Pecatonica (413) finished just ahead of the host Flying Arrows (415) for third place. Iowa–Grant shot a 511 to finish eighth. 

Senior Sawyer Dobson led the Panthers with a 114 to tie for 24th place.

Monday, back at Lancaster, Busch and Altfilisch led the Hillmen with identical 5-over-par 41s to tie for second behind Kirsch, who again won medalist honors on his home course with a 1-over-par 37.

Rorhbach and Eggers each shot 44 to tie for fourth and aid Platteville’s 20-stroke team victory over Lancaster (190). The Hillmen shot a combined 170.

Platteville traveled to Richland Center Tuesday and will next compete at the Lake Geneva Invitational on Monday.

Iowa–Grant shot a 246 to finish sixth out of sevens teams as Monday at the Barneveld Southwest Wisconsin Activities League mini meet, the first of six regular season meets this year.

Jason Sedbrook shot a 57 to lead the Panthers on Monday,

Iowa–Grant will return to action Monday at the Fennimore SWAL mini meet on Hickory Grove Golf Course.
