Serres leads Hillmen boys to D3 team title at Verona

Junior Jace Serres finished second in Division 3 and 19th out of 140 runners in Saturdays 20-team Verona Invitational. Serres performance led Platteville to the D3 boys team title.

VERONA — The Platteville High School boys and girls cross country teams kicked off the 2017 season at the 20-team Verona Invitational on Saturday.

The Platteville boys team won the Division 3 competition with Jace Serres (17:01) medaling, placing 19th overall in the field of 140 and second in D3 with a time of 17:00.22. 

Serres was followed by junior Calvin Wernimont (8th/64th, 18:06), junior Alex Sonsalla (11th/82nd, 18:37), senior Logan Henry (14th/86th, 18:42), sophomore  Miles Steckling (18th/92nd, 18:53), junior John Cramer (22nd/97th, 19:00) and junior Lucas Johnson (26th/110th, 19:39) rounding out the top seven scorers for the Hillmen.

The Platteville girls team placed fifth out of the seven teams in the Division 3 competition and 17th overall. 

Junior Cori Kettler was Platteville’s first finisher at 22:35. She placed 20th in D3 and 77th overall out of 134 varsity runners. Senior Morgan Wehnke came in 23rd/83rd (22:52), followed by senior Julia Kasper (27th/91st, 23:06), freshman Harmony Bell (30th/95th), sophomore Alexis Thompson (33rd/112th) and senior Hanna Langmaier (37th/112th)

Sophomore Brittani Meis had to drop out with a hip injury rounding out the top seven scorers for the Hillmen.

Platteville raced Dodgevill/Minearl Point in a Southwest Wisconsin Conference dual on Tuesday and then will compete in the Luther College All-American Invitational on Saturday in Decorah, Iowa.

Iowa–Grant competes at Darlington Invite

 

DARLINGTON — The shorthanded Iowa–Grant Panthers competed at the 23-team Darlington Invitational on Saturday.

Neither I–G team factored in the team scoring as the Panthers didn’t have complete teams.

Freshman Nick Connolly led the boys’ with a 24th-place finish (18:39.8).

Sophomore Sam McLeer (108th) and freshman Cora Fritz (111th) were the only Panther girls that competed.

Iowa–Grant will return to action Saturday at the River Valley Invitational.
