The discovery in some old belongings of a hand grenade resulted in evacuations of Broadway Street homes, diverted traffic, and a call to the Dane County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad Friday evening.

The homeowner, Jeffrey M. Schave, 595 Broadway St., discovered what appeared to be an old hand grenade around 6:35 p.m., according to Platteville police.

Police evacuated homes in the immediate vicinity of Schave’s house, and diverted traffic for around three hours.

The Dane County Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Madison removed the device from Schave’s house within 20 minutes of its arrival. Initial inspection revealed that the device was probably an active hand grenade, according to police.

In addition to Platteville and UW–Platteville police, the Platteville Fire Department assisted at the scene.
