A Minnesota prison inmate has been charged in connection with a September 2009 sexual assault in Platteville.

Juan Miguel Figueroa-Romero, 33, is charged with first-degree sexual assault, strangulation and suffocation, and false imprisonment.

A woman reported Sept. 19, 2009 that she was attacked on Market Street as she was walking home from downtown Platteville. A Madison police officer created a sketch of the suspect, and a DNA profile of the suspect was developed, but the suspect wasn’t identified, according to Platteville police.

Figueroa-Romero is an inmate at the Minnesota Correctional Facility — Faribault in Faribault, Minn. Figueroa-Romero was identified in early August after his DNA matched the DNA profile, according to police.

A Grant County bench warrant was issued for Figueroa-Romero Tuesday, according to court records.
