LAFAYETTE COUNTY—A man who allegedly sexually assaulted a girl at a daycare in Lafayette County was arrested earlier this month.
David W. Johnston, 55 of rural Darlington, was taken into custody on May 16 following an investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department. He faces a Class B Felony charge of first degree child sexual assault-sexual contact with a person under the age of 13, the punishment of which could be imprisonment for up to 60 years. His next court date is June 4.
According to the report by a sheriff’s deputy, a 9-year-old girl said she was sexually assaulted while at daycare in the town of Willow Springs. The victim reported the behavior after a school program about protective behavior. In an interview with a deputy, she told the officer that David Johnston touched her on two different occasions while she was playing computer games in his room between May and November of 2011.
David Johnston was questioned by authorities and admitted to the officers that he did touch the victim once. He was arrested and transported to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department.
David Johnston is the son of the daycare provider, Patricia Johnston, who has run a daycare out of her home for more than 30 years. Patricia Johnston told investigators that she knew nothing about the alleged assault.
The school guidance counselors and Iowa County Social Services assisted the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department with the investigation.
