Thirteen students ranging from freshmen to juniors who are enrolled in Instructor Mark Ekiss’s Spanish classes at the Boscobel High School will be spending five days in June applying their Spanish-speaking skills in Puerto Rico. In addition, students will explore the man-made creations and natural wonders of Puerto Rico’s island capital in beautiful San Juan in addition to Fajardo and Camuy Caverns. Students will see Spanish colonial architecture while walking along the stone walls of El Morro, visit the El Yunque Rain Forest and Luquillo Beach, and kayak in the glow of the Bioluminescent Bay. Students will also learn about San Juan’s agricultural and equestrian education program along with taking a salsa lesson.

The Puerto Rico trip is conducted through EF (Education First) Explore America that provides airfare and transportation, hotel accommodations, overnight security, breakfast and dinner, all gratuities, guided tours and activities, full-time tour director, illness and accident coverage, traveler support team, and 24hour emergency assistance. In addition, one college credit is available to students who complete a preapproved independent study topic in Puerto Rico.

Because of the high cost of the trip, the 13 students along with the Boscobel Spanish Boosters are raising funds through a pasta supper at the Boscobel High School on Friday, February 17, from 4-7 p.m. for $6/ticket (children 5 and under are free). Tickets can be purchased from any of the students or at the door. Donations are accepted and welcome.
